Photograph and artwork submissions
Your webmaster is over the moon about using the original images and artwork
of BUUF members and friends with your permission. He is also pretty
darn good at editing bitmap images for use on the web and with your
permission will size, crop and enhance images as best he can to share
them here.
If you want control of your work, that's fine too, but it reduces
the decision about whether/where to use to a simple "yes or no."
Editing guidelines
What matters for use on the web is how many pixels (px) are in the
image. Dots per inch (dpi) has to do with printing, not browsing.
There are three basic sizes we use:
"thumbnail"
maximum 120px x 120px
This is typically a provocative excerpt or crop, used to provide a
hyperlink to a medium or large version. We try to keep our main pages
small for those with low-bandwidth connections, but offer larger and
more interesting pictures for those who want them.
"Medium size," for images used on primary pages
landscape orientation: maximum 500px (w) x 400px (h),
preferably no more than 480 x 360px.
portrait orientation: maximum 420px (w) x 560px (h),
preferably no more than 360 x 480px.
"Large," the largest images we typically offer (with links that
note the size of the file)
landscape 800 x 600, portrait 600 x 800px maximum.
If you want control of the editing, do the best crop/histogram adjust/
color balance/sharpening/whatever for each of those 3 versions.
That's a lot to ask of someone offering us pictures for free; as noted
above, your webmaster will happily edit as needed if you send
"full-sized" originals. Please check ahead of time if you're going to
send more than a MB or two; your email or mine my limit maximum message
size and we can arrange for other transfer means if needed.
Acknowledgements
Our gratitude for those who have shared their work comes with the
humble recognition that we will not remember to thank every one who
has contributed over many years. Yet we must name names as best we
can.
Melissa Chambers' fine chalice logo is
one of many
that are made available to UU congregations. Melissa has also contributed artworks to the Fellowship and the BUUF News.
Frank Shuff has been as close to "official BUUF photographer" as
anyone for a long time, and we appreciate his continuing
contributions.
Elizabeth Greene, Tom von Alten,
Mike Chambers and many others have contributed work over the years,
enlivening the BUUF News.
If we're using (or have used) your artwork or image(s) and don't have
it acknowledged both at the place where we use it (in the image's
title attribute) and here, and should,
please let me know so I can make amends! This applies to images
we've used in our newsletters (which are archived on
this site, but alas with most of the artwork lost) as well.
